Can I take the course any time I want or is there a specific time frame?
Nearly all Chemeketa Online classes are the same as regular college classes in that they begin the first day of the college term and end no later than Friday of finals week. And, like regular face to face classes, not all courses are offered every term.

Are there any times when the system is not available?
Yes. Due to unforeseen problems, part or all of the system may be down for repair at times. If downtimes ever extend more than a few hours, instructors will be notified of this in order to adjust deadlines accordingly. The Elearn system (Campus Edition) has a weekly maintenance window during which the system may be unavailable.

Are there any seminars or orientations at the college where someone could walk me through working on your system?
Not any longer. The Orientation for taking online classes is fully online now. This is highly recommended for students who have never taken a class this way before. The Orientation walks the student through the various areas of skills and prerequisites that help ensure a successful online experience. Additionally, there is the Handbook for Online Students that presents similar information in a slightly different way.

What about accreditation?
All credit classes from Chemeketa Online are through Chemeketa Community College. The Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges granted full accreditation to Chemeketa in December 1972. Recently, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities has reaffirmed our accreditation for another 10 years. In addition, the Oregon Department of Education has approved all of our professional-technical programs and college transfer courses. Professional associations have also accredited those professional-technical programs which require approval. For more information on accreditation and approvals, contact the office of the Vice President of Academic Services in Building 3 on the Salem Campus at (503) 399-5144.

I have just registered for an online class for next term. Does this automatically give me access to the class?
Maybe. However, materials or access to a particular class may not be available until shortly before the term starts. Please check the Chemeketa Online Home Page to see if these links are available. Between terms you will not see them. There may be a link to your online class on My Chemeketa - My Courses (your instructor may be in control of that) but you should always check Chemeketa Online first.

How do online classes work?
Online classes are similar to face to face classes in the sense that there is a real instructor and fellow students involved in the learning process during the college term. Grades, lectures, due dates, assignments, group discussions, textbooks, tests, college credit, are all a part of online classes as well. The main difference is that the classroom is a web site that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and that lectures are read instead of listened to; discussions are typed instead of spoken. Many courses have a weekly schedule so the student needs to go to the class web page several times a week to see if there is anything new that pertains to their studies. Discussions and communication with the instructor takes place in web-based message areas (like e-mail), chat rooms, Internet e-mail, and threaded conferences (sorted by discussion topic rather than sequentially).

Is there a certain time we have to be online everyday?
No. That's the beauty of it. You can log on to your class at any time of the day or night and participate in the class. Discussions, with the exception of chats, do not happen in real time, so if you ask a question, it may be a day or two before you get an answer. Most classes are structured on a week to week basis so as long as you log on at least two or three times during the week, you're OK. Some instructors may have more stringent requirements.

How do I obtain my Official Transcript?
Official Transcripts are the type that can be transferred to/from other schools and are used to determine degree/program eligibility, etc. The cost currently is $5 (+ $1 per extra copy). A request requires your name, social security number, address, and signature. You can download the request form at: http://www.chemeketa.edu/shared/forms/transcriptrequest.pdf and fill it out ahead of time. Contact the Enrollment Center at 503-399-5006 or come into any Chemeketa campus business office and fill out the form. Unofficial transcripts can be viewed at any time by logging in to My Chemeketa and choosing View Transcript from the My Chemeketa Shortcuts section of the Get There Fast! channel.

How do I get instructor permission to register for a class that is closed?
You do need to contact the instructor about letting you register for a particular class after the start of the term or if it is closed. If you don't know the instructor's email, go to Chemeketa Online at:

http://online.chemeketa.edu

and follow the links to find the class you want. Under the Instructor column in the List of Classes, click on the linked instructor's name. On the next page you can click on the instructor's email address and be taken to a form to send them a message. Be sure to type your return email address carefully.

In this message you need to include the CRN of the class you need plus your "K" number (student ID). If you don't know this, log on to My Chemeketa at:

http://my.chemeketa.edu/

and choose Display your Schedule under the My Chemeketa Shortcuts in the left column. Your K number will be shown in the upper-right.

The instructor will have to go into My Chemeketa and grant you the ability to register for that class, then email you back so that you can try registering again.

There is no guarantee that this process will happen in a positive or timely manner. Register Early!

My class syllabus is a Word document but I don't have Word. How can I view this file?
You can download the Word Viewer 2003 application from Microsoft. Alternately, there is a free office suite called OpenOffice. It is open source software, and can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org. Alternately, you can set up an account with one of the services on the web that allow you to work with MS Office files completely online. The ones we have tested are Google Docs & Spreadsheets and ThinkFree.

Are prerequisites enforced at Chemeketa?
At this point only Math classes require prerequisites. A student cannot register for a math course without their record showing having met the prerequisite and the instructor is the only one to override this. So, students will need contact the instructors for approval to register if the system blocks their registration. The instructor would then do an override if they determine the eligibility of the student.

My Chemeketa
I have been advised to change my password often. How do I do that?
To keep your account more secure, you should change your passwords every sixty days. For students, it may be more practical to change your PIN after every term. Since your password defaults to your six-digit birthdate, someone who knows when you were born can glean this information.

To change your PIN, log on to My Chemeketa. Switch to the School Services tab and click on the "Change your PIN" link. Your new PIN will still have to be six digits so it is best not to use a date at all. Do not use your partner's birthdate, or any part of your Social Security number or 'K' number (Student ID). Six-digit passwords are inherently weak. At the top of this page, you'll find a randomly generated six-digit number that you can use.

Remember, if you change your password in My Chemeketa, it may take up to one business day for that change to be reflected in your Campus Edition (Elearn) password.

I just enrolled at Chemeketa. How do I find out what my user name and password is?
Once you are in the system, you will get a login account at My Chemeketa. My Chemeketa is located at http://my.chemeketa.edu Your user name will be the first letter of your first name followed by all or most of your last name plus perhaps some numbers depending on whether your last name is common or not. The login will be no more that eight characters, lower-case, no spaces. Your password defaults to your six-digit birthdate, but you should change that to a different six-digit number once you have logged in. You can find out what your My Chemeketa login is by going to the Request My Chemeketa login info link. If you need help with your My Chemeketa login, call 503-399-7899 during business hours and someone can help you. 3. Either paste your work into the message box or click the Add Attachments button
4. A new window pops up showing you your My Files area and starts the My Computer applet.

Campus Edition asks me to log in when I go to my class from My Chemeketa, but my password doesn't work.
If your My Chemeketa user name and password do not work in Campus Edition, it doesn't necessarily mean your password is wrong, but is merely an indication that Campus Edition has yet to be brought current with student lists. You should wait a day after first registering for online classes before trying to log in.

Can you explain what Threaded messages are?
The Discussion display has two modes that determine what you see listed and how you access the messages you need. These settings toggle. You can switch from displaying All messages to just the Unread ones. If there is not a button around it, that is the view you have. If you can click on the button, it will change to that view.

Same with the Threaded and Unthreaded. If there is a button over the word Unthreaded, then you are in Threaded mode. Each group of messages (original topic plus any replies) will be enclosed and will only show the original subject line. There will be a green triangle next to it pointing to the right that you can click to make it point downward. This will open up the thread and let you see the messages and select one to read. If you read the first message, you will have some button icons to jump to the next message in that thread (like a conversation) or you can jump to the next thread.

I clicked on the link to my class in Campus Edition Courses page but an alert box said: 'This section is not available yet.' What's going on?
Quite often this will occur before the term has started. It means the instructor has yet to add content to the class and make it available to students. Try the link again later or after the start of the term. If necessary, contact the instructor. Online Support cannot fix this for you, but we would like to be aware of the problem.

In some cases, it means that the class is located somewhere else. Go to Chemeketa Online and follow the links to the List of Classes page for the latest information regarding how to access the class.

I just registered for an online class and wish to access it but can't. I used to be able to go right in. Why not?
Since Campus Edition is not fully integrated with the student registration system, there will be a delay between the time you register and when you can access your class in Campus Edition. Batch imports are run early each morning as well as once mid-afternoon. If you register in the evening, please wait until the next day before attempting access or sending a message to support. Even so, you won't see your classes listed until the Thursday before the start of the term.

Why can't I read or compose messages in the mail area, yet I don't have a problem in the discussions area?
If you are having a problem accessing your mail, or composing a message, but you are not having a problem with the discussions area, then you may have an issue with the settings in your Norton Security software. This problem has been attributed almost exclusively to computers with Norton Security installed. If you have Norton Personal Firewall, the exact steps to change the settings may be different, depending on your version.

If you have Norton Personal Firewall 2002, open it and click the Personal Firewall button on the left so that other options appear. Then click the Personal Firewall Settings. First try unchecking the Enable Security checkbox to see if that enables the Mail tool in Campus Edition. If so, return to that settings screen and check the box again. Then try the Default Level button to see if that setting allows Campus Edition Mail tool. If so, leave it at that.

If not, you will have to return to the Norton Personal Firewall settings screen and choose the Custom Level... button and adjust the pop-up blocking and/or cookies settings to allow pop-ups and cookies from any chemeketa.edu site.

If you have the Norton toolbar installed in your browser, make sure you can see your toolbar (View menu - Toolbars). Go to Campus Edition at:

http://elearn.chemeketa.edu

Then click the Norton Internet Security drop-down menu from the toolbar and make sure "Block Cookies on this site" and "Block pop-ups on this site" don't have checks next to them. You can also get to "Configure security settings..." from this menu too. There may also be a "Web Contents Options..." item which may allow you to add "chemeketa.edu" sites to its list of allowed web sites.

If these solutions don't work, give tech support a call at 503.399.7399

Why can I still see the classes that I took last term when I log on to do my current coursework?
For students, previous term classes disappear the fourth Monday of the current term. The exception to this rule would be when a section date has been extended to allow for Incompletes. If you wish, you can use the little pencil icon in the upper-right corner of the list and hide old sections.

I keep seeing references to WebCT, Elearn, Campus Edition, CE6, etc. This is confusing. Are all these the same thing?
Yes. Our learning management system has gone through several personas during the past few years. It started out being called WebCT, and many still use this name even though the company no longer exists. So then we call the software Campus Edition or CE6 to get away from the company-specific brand name. Since Blackboard bought the application, some refer to it as Blackboard, but it is different than the main product that company sells. Quite often we now just refer to it as the Elearn system as that is how the URL is named.

I'm getting weird errors in the Elearn system. It was suggested that I clear my Java cache. How do I do this?
While troubleshooting some error messages from the Elearn system, you may be asked to clear not only your browser Temporary Internet Files from the Internet Options control panel, but also the Java cache as well.

To do this, go to your Start button and open Control Panel and choose Java. This will have a General tab and a Temporary Internet Files section with a Delete Files... button. Click that button and then OK to delete the stored files. The interface is similar on the Mac OS from Applications - Utilities - Java - J2SE 5.0 - Java Preferences.

Quit your browsers and then log back into the Elearn system. Some pages may load slightly slower the first time. Check to see if you are still getting errors. If so, copy the text of the error and paste it into a message to support.

How do I check my Windows computer for file errors?
Run chkdsk. Go to the Start button and choose Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. At the prompt type:

chkdsk c:

and then enter. Let the program run. If it detects errors in your file system, run chkdsk again but add the "fix" parameter:

chkdsk c: /f

It will tell you it cannot run and ask if you want it to run the next time you restart your computer Y/N. Type y and enter. Restart your computer and let the program run during startup. Any file errors should then be fixed.

I think my computer may have spyware. How do I get rid of it?
Spyware can take over your browsing and slow down your computer with junk. If you could access a site OK before but recently you can't, spyware may be the culprit. There are many spyware detection and removal programs out there. The two that the college recommends are Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search and Destroy. See the links to download these programs from Download.com

What are the system requirements?
Just about any Internet capable computer will work for most things. Preferably, the minimum system would have Windows XP (or later) or Mac OS 10 (or later) with 512 MB of RAM (the more the better). For Windows users, it is a good idea to go to the Windows Update page to download and install the latest updates and fixes for your computer. Macintosh users can go to the Apple - MacOS Support website to check for the latest software releases.

It is highly recommended that you use a recent version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (v.6 or higher) or Firefox (version 2.0 or higher) web browser. It is good to have more than one browser installed on your computer.

Campus Edition and AOL
If you intend to use America Online (AOL) for web access to Campus Edition, you must first access the Internet with AOL, and then use one of the preferred browsers noted above. The only compatible AOL browser is version 9 or higher, with Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher also installed on your computer. Do not use earlier versions of AOL's browser, as you will have difficulty using many Campus Edition tools as well as it may interfere with attachments. If you have an older version of AOL, connect through AOL, but then minimize it and use Internet Explorer.

Whichever browser you use, make sure that Cookies, JavaScript, and Java have not been disabled.

What are the best browser settings?
It is important to have your browser set properly to ensure that you will be able to access and navigate through all of the class areas.
It is also important to disable any software you may have that prevents pop-up windows or at least set it to allow pop-ups for all Chemeketa sites. From the Privacy tab of Internet Options control panel, or from the Tools menu, either uncheck Block Pop-ups or use the Settings... button to add:
  • duncan.chemeketa.edu
  • my.chemeketa.edu
  • elearn.chemeketa.edu

For Internet Explorer users:
go to the Tools menu » Internet Options » General tab and Delete all Temporary Internet Files. Then click the Settings... button and choose "Every Visit to the Page". Also, set the size of your folder to no more than around 50MB. On some versions, you can set it to empty this folder each time you quit the browser under the Advanced tab.

Check the Security tab and make sure it is set to Medium (Default) and not a Custom setting. IE6: Set the Privacy tab slider to "Accept All Cookies."

Also check the Content tab and choose the AutoComplete... button. Make sure only the first checkbox is checked. Click both the Clear Forms and Clear Passwords buttons.

You can get the recommended Java software version for Campus Edition as well as other plug-ins by going to http://www.webct.com/tuneup/viewpage?name=tuneup_browser_tuneup_information#plugins.

For Netscape users:
go to the Edit menu and choose Preferences... Click on the word "Advanced" and make sure that Java, JavaScript and Stylesheets are enabled and that it accepts all cookies. Then click the plus sign [+] next the the word "Advanced" and click the word "Cache". Press the Clear Memory Cache and Clear Disk Cache buttons, making sure that Memory Cache is no more than 1024 KBytes and Disk Cache is no more than 7680 KBytes. Make sure the "document is compared..." is set to "Every Time".

Please Note: Netscape has not been tested by Blackboard on the current system and is not an officially supported browser.

For Firefox users:
go to the Tools menu and choose Options...

  • Security tab - Passwords section
    • Uncheck the "Remember passwords for sites" unless you are using a Master Password.
    • Click the "Show Passwords..." button to see if any of your passwords got put in. We recommend removing any that you find there.
  • Privacy - Private Data section
    • Check the "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox".
    • Click the Settings... button to see which items will be cleared. Cookies need not be checked if you don't wish to delete those every time.
  • Content tab - If you wish to block pop-ups, check the box, then click the Exceptions... button and enter:

    *.chemeketa.edu

in the Address of Web Site textbox and click the "Allow" button.

Make sure that the Enable Java and Enable Javascript checkboxes are checked.

  • Advanced - Network tab
Set the Cache to a maximum of 50 MB and use the "Clear Now" button if it was more than that.

Most other default settings for Firefox should be OK.

When using these settings, pages may take a little longer to download, but you can be assured of getting the information from the server and not from storage.

It is always a good idea to make sure your computer has frequent maintenance by using System Tools such as chkdsk and Disk Defragmenter. For Macintosh users, Norton Utilities provides similar routines to keep your computer clean and happy.

Troubleshooting:

  • If you have any toolbars installed, such as Yahoo! toolbar, try uninstalling it.
  • Try using a different computer to see if the problem goes away.
  • Try disabling any security software (temporarily) to see if the problem goes away.
  • Try downloading and installing an officially Certified or Compatible browser such as those listed on the Tuneup page at: Supported Browsers
  • Check your computer for spyware
  • Run chkdsk (Windows only)

How do I attach my homework file to a message?
In every message area there is a way to attach a file. In WebBoard, you check the "Attach" checkbox. In Campus Edition, there is an "Add Attachments" button which, when clicked, opens a new window and either provides a My Computer applet or a link to use the traditional Browse... button to find your file. This will bring up an "Open..." dialog box showing the directories on your computer. Find your file and highlight it's name, then click the "Open" button. This doesn't really open the file, but merely copies the path to the file into the adjacent textbox, or uses the applet to upload the file. You will know your file is there when the file name appears directly under the "Add Attachments" button. Once this is done, your message can be sent and will include the file you chose.

How do I copy and paste a message from a word processor into a new message?
  1. Type your message in a word processor or text editor.
  2. While keeping your word processor program running, go onto the Internet and go to your class messaging area.
  3. Create a new message so that there is a large textbox where the body of the message will be composed.
  4. Instead of typing anything there, switch back to your word processor and select the text that you want to include in your message.
  5. Choose COPY from the Edit menu. This places the text on your computer's invisible Clipboard.
  6. Switch back to your web browser, to the message creation screen and click inside the body area of the new message so you see the blinking caret in the upper left corner.
  7. Now go to the Edit menu of the browser and choose PASTE. Your text should appear in the body of the message.
  8. Be sure to include a Subject line or Topic above the message and send it.

How are we tested?
Tests usually consist of web page forms which allow multiple choice, fill-in blanks and essay text boxes. There may be a way to review skipped questions once the test is finished but using the "Back" button is not recommended. Tests can be timed and are usually offered only during specific days or even prearranged hours of a day. The instructor will give explicit instructions as to how and when the tests can be taken.

How do we hand in assignments?
This depends on the instructor's preference. Most often your assignment is a typed essay or a computer file that is attached to a private message to the instructor. The class syllabus usually explains how assignments are to be turned in.

Click the Advanced... button and enter: /Wintermeyer (or your instructor's last name)
